Irish Screen America will present a screening of Young Plato, the powerful new award-winning documentary by directors, Neasa Ni Chianain and Declan McGrath, produced by Soilsiú Films, on Saturday, May 21st at 7pm at the Laemmle Monica Film Center (Santa Monica, CA), Los Angeles. The screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with the Director, Neasa Ní Chianáín, Producer, David Rane and lead cast member Holy Cross Boys School Principal, Kevin McArevey and Head of Pastoral Care, Jan-Marie Reel. The film will screen for one night only as part of the Ireland Week 2022 program.

Kevin McArevey, is an Elvis-loving elementary school principal in Ardoyne, NorthBelfast, Northern Ireland, where a marginalized, working class community has for generations been plagued by poverty, drugs and guns. Multi-award-winning observational documentary Young Plato follows the dreams of McArevey and his dedicated, visionary team illustrating how critical thinking and pastoral care can empower and encourage children to question the mythologies of war and of violence and to see the possibilities beyond the boundaries and limitations of their own community.

At Holy Cross Boys School, fights at recess are resolved at the Philosophy board where the youngsters learn to reason and think for themselves. By teaching Philosophy to boys in a post-conflict zone, he’s transforming the school, and the community.  “Young Plato” shines a positive light on contemporary Northern Ireland, offering a model for building a culture of peace in these troubling times.
